Alec joined the ADD lab as a PhD student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in January 2020. His current research focuses on incorporating in-situ acoustic and ultrasonic monitoring into the laser powder bed fusion process for defect detection. He also works to improve the printability and properties of additively manufactured CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloys. Prior to joining the lab, Alec earned his B.S. in Physics at Iowa State University (2019) and conducted research at Ames National Laboratory, NASA, and Boeing throughout his undergraduate career. During his time at UW, Alec’s passion for science and public service has led him to complete two internships at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and to win the ETI Graduate Research Fellowship in 2023.
